A NEW LENS & FEATURES!

Fri Aug 24, 2007, 11:52 AM
  • Mood: Speechless
  • Listening to: Prayer to St. Peter - Edwin McCain
How pathetic does it make me to be able to have a full fledge conversation with my History teacher today during the middle of going over the presidential candidates about High School Musical 2? XD Questions came up about Zac Efron, and Ashley Tisdale, and my friend and I had to battle down the convinced guys in my class that they truly are older than the character that they portray... Zac at 19, and Ashley at 22. OKAY - moving on. I don't really like High School Musical that much, I can handle watching it about once... but I will admit that a few of the songs from the second movie are catchy. (NO, I didn't buy the soundtrack, XD, thank you very much. My friend sent me the songs through Zune.)

But onto my more exciting news: I GOT MY NEW LENS! -throws confetti- I finally got my dad up to Ritz Camera, even if we did show up about 20 minutes before they closed and held them back from being able to go home for about an hour. XD I got it. And that's what I'm concerned about. I was really into the 18-300mm Nikkor lens, but my dad refused to even look into it when our salesman informed him on the price. So, I got the Nikkor 55-200mm with vibration reduction. I'm completely happy with it, and it's taken some great shots for me since I got it...

BUT I am slightly concerned with the grainy appearance of the photos... [link] < view that for an example of what I mean. (The all-around grainy texture to the out of focus, and even in focus areas..) Does anyone know if that's a glitch in my lens? Or a setting I should fix on my camera... or if it's a sign I should probably return it.

The graininess is the ISO you have the camera set to, try setting it to a lower number like 100 or 200 if you have a lot of light. It looks like you didn't have a whole lot of light though so 800 was probably good to use.

I'll try lowering it. I know it sounds horrible, coming from someone who just upgraded to a new lens, but how do I go along to lower it? (I'm completely teaching myself so far, haven't had the time to attend any classes, but I think my dad signed me up at Ritz when we bought my lens.) I took that picture with decent lighting actually, I just raised my shutter speed, trying to create a darker picture without having to Photoshop it. It wasn't bright, nor really bad light, but I live the middle of the woods, so it was around 4:30PM, add in a few clouds and thousands of trees. XD

Telephotos also tend to enhance grain due to the narrow DOF that they encourage... because there is more blur and less detail in the photo, the grain tends to stick out more in the not so detailed areas.. If that makes sense... so yeah like Taylor says, use a lower ISO, if you can't get a reasonable shutter speed to hand hold, use a tripod or monopod so you can use a longer exposure...
